OYSTER BAY, NY – The North Shore-LIJ Health System recently held its seventh annual summer benefit concert, raising a record $1.5 million for The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research. The benefit, held July 11 at the Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park in Oyster Bay, NY, was emceed by ‘Today Show’ personality Al Roker and featured Grammy-award winning singer-songwriter Lionel Richie, who performed before nearly 1,000 attendees.
The outdoor event also served as an opportunity to recognize the Feinstein Institute’s scientific advances and ongoing research in the areas of: rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, diabetes, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and other conditions.
“So many Americans have been touched by illness and are hoping for scientific breakthroughs that will lead to cures,” said Kevin J. Tracey, MD, president of the Feinstein Institute. “The desire for these breakthroughs is the driving force that gives energy to the scientists at the Feinstein Institute. We are driven to deliver these cures.”
Some of the most recent breakthroughs and ground-breaking research being conducted at the Feinstein Institute were showcased at the event, including the moving story of a young female teacher who suffered with recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP), caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Controlling growth of these tumors typically involves invasive, painful throat surgery. Bettie Steinberg, PhD, chief scientific officer at the Feinstein Institute, and Allan Abramson, MD, chairman of otolaryngology at North Shore-LIJ, worked with the young patient who is in remission after living with RRP for 10 years.
As part of the evening’s festivities, Dr. Tracey presented the Maureen and Ralph Nappi 2012 Fellowship Award, named in honor of long-time supporters of the Feinstein Institute, to Dr. Yong-Rui Zou, assistant investigator in the Center for Autoimmune and Musculoskeletal Diseases, who is currently working on the role that chemokines play in lupus disease.
