Schizophrenia - Genetic Study
Prospective Cytochrome P450 Genotyping and Clinical Outcomes in Patients with Schizophrenia
Protocol ID
Protocol Description
The purpose of this study is to see whether screening for a particular gene can help decide how to best treat patients with the medication, risperidone. This particular gene codes for an enzyme, called “Cytochrome P450 2D6” (CYP2D6), which determines how quickly your body breaks down chemicals such as medications like risperidone. Some patients respond well to risperidone, but others don’t and they may experience side effects. We don’t really know why this happens. The genetic information will help us to see whether adjusting doses of risperidone can improve clinical care and decrease side effects from the medication. This will ultimately benefit patients with schizophrenia in the future.
