Cystitis-Painful Bladder Study

The Effects of Caffeine on Interstitial Cystitis/Painful Bladder Syndrome (IC/PBS)

Protocol ID

08-269

Protocol Description

The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between caffeine and interstitial cystitis (IC) symptoms.  This study will assess for changes in voiding symptoms, such as voiding frequency and volume, and pelvic pain following the consumption of caffeine in a dose equivalent to one cup of caffeinated coffee.
Previous research has suggested that consumption of caffeinated products may aggravate IC symptoms.  However, this is the first study to look at the impact of caffeine on voiding patterns and pelvic pain in the IC population.  We envision that information derived form this study will enable clinicians to make evidenced based dietary recommendations regarding caffeine intake in the Interstitial Cystitis population.
