Biomarkers in the Evaluation of Chronic Lung Disease

GCRC 0274: Biomarkers in the Evaluation of Chronic Lung Disease

Protocol ID

09-076

Protocol Description

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a serious condition for which there are treatments, but for which the signs and symptoms are not always clear. PH is the measurement of high blood pressure in the arteries (blood vessels) of the lungs. In PH the pulmonary arteries can narrow, leaving less room for the blood to flow, which may cause the arteries to stiffen and possibly become blocked. This narrowing can cause the heart to work harder to pump blood through the lungs. Over time this may weaken the heart.

One purpose of this study is to measure specific proteins in the blood that are released from the heart and lung before and after exercise. Researchers think this simple blood test may make it easier to diagnose and determine the severity of pulmonary hypertension (PH). Traditionally, a series of other tests have been used to classify the severity of the disease.

This study may also help create better treatment of pulmonary hypertension.
