Feinstein Facts

The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research is the research branch of the North Shore-LIJ Health System. Headquartered in Manhasset, NY, the Feinstein Institute is home to hundreds of scientists who study a wide range of conditions, including inflammatory diseases, neurological disorders, and cancer. The Feinstein Institute is less than two decades old — yet some of the most important discoveries in inflammation, autoimmune diseases, and Parkinson’s disease have taken place here.

The Feinstein Institute is organized into 11 Centers of Excellence with over 55 laboratories. The clinical research programs are led by established, successful NIH-funded Principal Investigators who are leaders in their fields. The North Shore-LIJ Health System received more than $44 million in external support of research projects and programs in 2008.

Institute scientists receive funding from multiple sources and the Feinstein is in the top 6th percentile of all NIH grant-receiving institutions. And the NIH funding has grown 50 percent since 2004.  Our scientists are leaders in their field and publish in leading journals. What’s more, the institute publishes its own cutting-edge biomedical research journal, Molecular Medicine and its biweekly podcast, Mollie Medcast.

Scientists have enrolled more than 125,000 patients in clinical trials in 10 years and recruitment continues to grow every year. And the scientific discoveries have led to the creation of a large Technology Transfer division that manages a patent estate of more than 200 patents in 70 fields of technology.  The institute also serves as training facilities for students in Elmezzi, Hofstra, Stony Brook, Einstein, and other area schools, and provides community outreach to middle and secondary schools in the region. We work closely with IS59 in Queens, providing students with hands-on lab techniques. The Feinstein also operates the Dolan DNA Learning Center West in collaboration with Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.
