GCRC - Research Nursing
The research nurses here at the GCRC bring with them various backgrounds, all of which include critical care. They are continually developing new skills to meet protocol requirements among them:
- Safe patient care
- Specimen collection
- Specimen processing
- IV therapy
- Serial blood sampling
- Biofeedback
- Scheduling of patients
- Telephone questionnaires
- Medical chart reviews and data collection
- EKGs
Providing both adult and pediatric nursing care, the GCRC outpatient unit is located in the North Shore-LIJ Research Institute at 350 Community Drive, adjacent to NSUH Manhasset. The GCRC has two exam rooms and a treatment room with 2 recliner chairs for studies. Overnight stays are permitted in the main hospital in private rooms dedicated to the GCRC for research on 4 Cohen. Although these patients are cared for by the hospital RN’s the GCRC RN’s are involved in the research orders, follow up, transportation to and from the main hospital to the outpatient unit in the research building, and various treatments/procedures depending on the protocol.
The Nurse Manager
Julie Martusciello RN, BSN is the Nurse Manager for the GCRC.
She brings to her position over seven years experience in management.
At NSUH she was the Assistant Director for a Cardiac Surgery Telemetry/Stepdown Unit for 5 years and prior to that the Patient Care Manager for a Cardio-Thoracic ICU for two years.
She oversees the unit to provide:
- Safe nursing care
- Education
- Protocol development and compliance
- Coordination of all research projects
- Scheduling of staff to meet subjects' needs
