On any given day, the General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) is bustling with research volunteers – patients and healthy control subjects – scientists and clinicians. The GCRC is the Feinstein Institute’s major clinical arm, a place where the goals of translational research are reflected in scores of research projects aimed at understanding human diseases. The Feinstein Institute GCRC is funded by a $14.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the largest grant in the North Shore-LI J Health System.

The aim of the research center is to bridge the gap between basic research and clinical patient care. Scientists and study volunteers, many of whom suffer from a wide range of diseases, get an opportunity to meet in a state-of-the-art centralized facility. Stories are shared, ideas are generated and collaborations between investigators set the stage for new research projects. The GCRC ’s highly trained staff facilitates clinical research underway at the Feinstein Institute by providing quality nursing care, administration and ethical oversight. The GCRC has a four-bed outpatient unit and administrative offices and a four-bed inpatient unit next door at North Shore University Hospital.

The Core facility services under the Center for Patient-Oriented Research are integral to the GCRC. The primary functions of these cores are to provide advanced support to ongoing GCRC studies and to develop or validate new research methods. The Core facilities of the GCRC include biostatistics and biomedical informatics; molecular biology and immunology; a state-of-the-art brain imaging facility; a biorepository, and the Tissue Donation Program. A broad range of clinical studies are conducted at the GCRC and scientists have access to all of the core facilities to support their research efforts.

The GCRC also supports the training of tomorrow’s scientists through collaborations with the Elmezzi Graduate School of Molecular Medicine, which is part of the Feinstein and the North Shore-LIJ Health System.
