Welcome from Our Director
Director and Chief Executive
Welcome to The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research. We are part of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, located in Manhasset, NY. We have hundreds of scientists working on scores of diseases. Our mission is to move quickly from the bench into patient care so that discoveries today can equal hope for tomorrow.
A neurosurgeon by training, my research focuses on the neural circuits that control the immune system. My work and those of my collaborators has led to the development of experimental therapeutics for treating arthritis and other inflammatory disorders. I have headed the Laboratory of Biomedical Science at the Feinstein since 1992 and became Feinstein's second Chief Executive in 2005. Prior to assuming my recent position, I was the Program Director of the Feinstein's General Clinical Research Center.
My vision for the Feinstein is to foster an environment where members can collaborate to explore and discover the basis of disease in order to transform the future practice of medicine. Our strategic plan, as approved by the Feinstein Board of Directors in 2007, is to identify and support outstanding investigators to pursue their discoveries in disease pathogenesis, molecular and genetic diagnosis, and development of innovative therapeutics. The Feinstein continues to expand its impact and scope to advance scientific leaders and their discoveries in immunology, neuroscience, psychiatric disease and cancer. The active clinical trials program recruits some 10,000 patients annually who participate in clinical research projects under some 1100 sanctioned study protocols. These activities are facilitated and enhanced by a recently opened annex to the Boas Marks Pavilion that is home to the Goldman International Conference Center, world-class laboratories and an expanded clinical research center. Feinstein researchers also enjoy appointments in the Elmezzi Graduate School of Molecular Medicine, an independent PhD degree granting institution that recruits medical school graduates to receive graduate education in molecular medicine research. The Feinstein's peer reviewed scientific publication Molecular Medicine, a widely read open access publication, is an important vehicle for distributing and disseminating knowledge created at the Feinstein, and from other laboratories at the world's leading institutions.
