Parkinson’s Disease - Efficacy, Safety, and Tolerability of Pioglitazone

Protocol Description

The FS-ZONE trial will study the effect of pioglitazone (Actos®) on the progression (change over time) of PD over 44 weeks. The study will evaluate whether pioglitazone (Actos®) is safe and well tolerated. We will study two doses of pioglitazone: 15 and 45 milligrams taken once daily and there will be at least six (6) in-person visits and one (1) telephone call over 48weeks (1 year).

Eligibility Criteria

•    Men and women between the ages 30 - 80
•    Persons diagnosed with idiopathic Parkinson’s disease for less than 5 years
•    Persons taking a stable dose of dopamine agonist
•    Persons taking rasagiline (Azilect) 1 mg/day or selegiline (Deprenyl, Eldepryl) 10 mg/day for at least 8 weeks but no more than 8 months
