Research Investigator Science Expo:
Presenting Science to the Community
 
Win a cash prize and the chance to present
to the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research’s Board of Directors
 
Post Docs, Fellows, Residents, Doctoral Students, and Institute Scientists who are conducting scientific research within the Health System are eligible.

Abstract

Each researcher will be asked to submit an abstract about his/her scientific research project in the form of a casual letter to a family member in non-technical language. The best abstracts/letters will be chosen and their authors will advance to the oral presentations.  Judges for this round will include
Dr. Kevin Tracey, President and Dr. Bettie Steinberg, Chief Scientific Officer of the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, among others.

All abstracts must be no more than 300 words, utilizing Times New Roman size 12 font, single spaced. The abstract should be in the form of a letter. Abstract/letters should not include figures, tables or references.  The individual submitting the abstract/letter must be the author. The subject is at the discretion of the author, but should be based on research within the Health System. All abstract are to be submitted to Kathleen McGill @ kmcgill@nshs.edu.

Oral
Presentation 
Mornings of Tuesday, March 27th and Friday, March 30th         
Researchers in this round will give presentations about their projects to a diverse panel of judges. Presenters will be judged on their ability to communicate their ideas to non-scientists.  Feedback will be given to all those presenting. Four researchers will be selected by the judges to advance to the finals.

All oral presentations are to be conducted by the abstract author on the project submitted. The presentation is to be between 7-10 minutes, with an additional five minutes for questions. Audiovisual technology may be used. Those participating might consider taking the two-day Presentation Skills course being offered at the Center for Learning and Innovation.  The next course is 2/22/12-2/23/12. Open to the Health System & Community       
Afternoon of Wednesday, April 18th
Researchers in this round will give presentations about their projects to a general audience and diverse panel of judges.  Presenters will be judged on their ability to communicate their ideas. A 1st and 2nd prize will be awarded.
 
 
 
This competition incorporates objectives from the Health System’s Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Health Literacy. It encourages engagement between the Health System and community while providing science education and promoting science and health literacy. Get involved if you’re up for the challenge and looking to advance your career.
