Center for Heart and Lung Research

Edmund J Miller, PhD
Center Head

The Center for Heart and Lung Research is dedicated to the study of the cardiopulmonary system. The Center has developed out of the interactive studies between its four founder basic science members, Drs. Liu, Miller, Ojamaa and Powell who are focused on different aspects of heart and lung function in health and disease. The goals of The Center are to develop a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in the evolution of disease states, in order to develop new strategies to prevent or treat individuals at risk.  The Center brings together both clinicians and basic scientists to study specific disease states. Ongoing studies within The Center include: The mechanisms involved ischemic heart disease, acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) and congestive heart failure; The influence of the lung on other organ function during pneumonia and sepsis;  The role of the proteasome in heart failure and diabetic cardiomyopathy; The pathogenesis and treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH);  and the study of sleep apnea. In addition, the investigators are looking at the ways in which the normal physiological workings of the body alter with age, and how this can influence the ability to deal with infections and trauma.

The Center for Heart and Lung Research is comprised of the Laboratory of Cardiopulmonary Research, led by Edmund J. Miller, PhD, CChem, FRSC; the Laboratory of Molecular Cardiovascular Research, led by Kaie Ojamaa, PhD; the Laboratory of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, led by Shu Fang Liu, MD; and the Laboratory of Cardiac Metabolism, led by Saul Powell, PhD.
