Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee

What is an IACUC?

The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is a self-regulating entity that, according to U.S. federal law, must be established by institutions that use laboratory animals for research or instructional purposes to oversee and evaluate all aspects of the institution’s animal care and use program.

The use of animals in research, teaching, and testing may not occur unless their use is explicitly approved in writing by the Feinstein Institute IACUC. This Institution complies with all applicable provisions of the Animal Welfare Act and other Federal statutes and regulations relating to animals. This Institution is guided by the “U.S. Government Principles for the Utilization and Care of Vertebrate Animals Used in Testing, Research, and Training.” This Institution has established and will maintain a program for activities involving animals according to the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.

Committee

The IACUC is qualified through the experience and expertise of its members appointed to oversee the animal program, facilities and procedures in accordance with the applicable regulations. Our IACUC is comprised of individuals with diverse preclinical and professional expertise from throughout the organization and surrounding community.

IACUC Functions

The IACUC is responsible for the oversight and review of the program, review and approval of proposals for the use of animals in research and requests to modify approved animal-based research, inspection of all animal facilities, in accordance with the Animal Welfare Act Regulations, Public Health Service Policy, United States Department of Agriculture Regulations, and the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals as basis for evaluation.  The committee submits evaluations and makes recommendations to the Institutional Official regarding any aspect of the animal research program, facilities, or personnel training. The IACUC reviews and investigates concerns involving the care and use of animals and is authorized to suspend activities involving animals when necessary, take corrective action and report to funding agencies, OLAW and the USDA.
